Review of the Film “Dance with Me”

(“Jahan Ba Man Beraghs” – Directed by Soroush Sehat, 2019)
“Dance with Me” marks Soroush Sehat’s first feature film—an intimate blend of humor, emotion, and existential reflection. From the very beginning, it becomes clear that the film is neither merely a comedy nor purely a somber drama; instead, it is an experience delicately balanced between laughter and tears.

Strengths

  1.  Intimate, character-driven atmosphere
Set in a forest villa, the story unfolds in a confined setting where characters interact closely. This limited space offers a chance to deeply understand their relationships, vulnerabilities, and unspoken fears.
The friendships portrayed feel authentic and relatable—almost as if the viewer is sitting among them.
    2. Warm and cohesive performances
Ali Mosaffa anchors the film emotionally with his subtle, understated acting.
Pantea Panahiha and Hanieh Tavassoli deliver convincing and heartfelt roles.
Rambod Javan adds lively energy without overshadowing the tone.
    3. Approach to mortality without excessive gloom
Although the film revolves around death, it doesn’t aim to frighten the audience. Sehat uses death as a lens through which to explore life.
Light humor and intimate moments keep the emotional balance steady.
    4. Music and pacing
Karen Homayounfar’s score complements the film’s atmosphere beautifully.
The pacing is slow but consistent, allowing viewers to fully absorb the emotional space.

Weaknesses

  1. At times overly slow
Some scenes feel stretched out, especially conversations that serve more as mood-setters than narrative drivers. This may test the patience of certain viewers.
    2. Uneven character depth
Despite being an ensemble piece, a few characters remain underdeveloped, functioning mostly as emotional support for the central figures.
    3. Familiarity to certain European ensemble dramas
The film occasionally feels influenced by Western films about friendship and mortality. While not harmful, this slightly affects its sense of originality.

🎭 Themes and message

The core message of the film is:
Life is too short to waste on fear, resentment, pretense, or regret.
Human emotions—friendship, love, anxiety, and acceptance of life’s impermanence—are portrayed with subtlety and sincerity, without heavy-handed symbolism.

Overall

“Dance with Me” is warm, heartfelt, and accessible—not a masterpiece of the drama genre, yet undeniably affecting. It may make you laugh, tear up, and reconsider your relationships and the fragility of life.
If you’re looking for a film that inspires a sense of emotional renewal and the courage to face life’s uncertainties, this one is a strong choice.
