Summary:
“Barcode” is a 2016 Iranian drama-comedy that follows the intertwined lives of two young men in Tehran—Hamed and Mehdi—each facing his own struggles in an unforgiving urban environment. The film is structured in two major chapters, gradually revealing how the characters’ paths intersect and how their decisions shape one another’s destinies. Hamed, a calm and introverted man, is constantly attempting to rebuild his life after a series of personal failures. He works through various odd jobs, trying to escape financial instability while dealing with emotional wounds from his past. His storyline portrays the frustrations of a young generation trying to find dignity and stability in a city full of obstacles. Mehdi, on the other hand, is bold, street-smart, and willing to bend the rules to survive. He gets involved in small scams, debts, and tense confrontations that push him deeper into trouble. His journey shows the chaotic, unpredictable side of urban life—where ambition, loyalty, and desperation collide. As the movie progresses, the audience slowly discovers how these two seemingly separate stories are connected. Small choices, chance encounters, and hidden relationships form a chain of events that ties their lives together in unexpected ways. This nonlinear storytelling adds layers of mystery and gradually exposes the truth behind their actions. “Barcode” uses humor, sharp dialogue, and social commentary to paint a vivid picture of modern Tehran, emphasizing the pressure placed on young people who are trying to rise above economic hardship, social limitations, and personal demons. The film highlights how fate, coincidence, and the harsh realities of city life can shape human behavior, ultimately showing that every individual carries a “barcode”—a unique story marked by both struggle and resilience.
